A late 19th century portrait of (Caius or Guius) Caesar Augustus Germanicus (12 AD -41 AD), nicknamed Caligula. He was born Gaius Julius Caesar but acquired the nickname Caligula meaning little caliga, ( a type of military boot) from those he wore when encountered by his father's soldiers during their campaign in Germania. His parents were Germanicus and Agrippina the Elder. He died by assassination in a joint conspiracy by Praetorian Guard officers, senators, and courtiers
