The sea tower at Methoni castle in the Greek Peloponnese. It was originally built to defend a harbour.

Methoni castle in the Greek Peloponnese, is built on the site of a defensive structure dating way back in history. It has been identified as ancient Pedasus, the seventh of the cities given to Achilles by Agamemnon. More fortifications were added to the city in the 4th century BC and it has developed as a defensive site ever since, occupied by many different peoples. It is built on a small peninsula and this, combined with the rocky nature of the coast, made it an excellent site to defend. In its time it has served to guard the harbour, has been a lighthouse, a prison and the last place of refuge for the castle's inhabitants. Today Methoni is open to visitors and under restoration. It remains one of the best castles in Greece to visit.
