'Artillery of King William III in Action at the Boyne, 1st July 1690'. By Theodor Mass. The Battle of the Boyne was fought between the two rival claimants of the English, Scottish, and Irish thrones; the Catholic King James II (1633-1701) and the Protestant King William III (1650-1702). The battle took place across the River Boyne near Drogheda on the east coast of Ireland and was won by King William III.
