The true Nuttallina scdhra, Eve., the Scaly Chi-ton, is a southern species, much resembling thelast, but having the individual valves very muchshorter in x^i*oportion to their width. Color ofvalves lighter, more variegated. Mopdlia muscosa, Gld.,the Mossy Chiton, Figure299, (Mopalia ciliata). This very variable speciesextends from the far northto San Diego. It may gen-erally be readily recog-nized by its hairy mantle-border, or girdle, whichresembles a fringe of stiffmoss. The outside of thevalves is sculptured, butthis fact is often obscured by growths of seaweedor other organisms. The interior of the valves is. Fig. 299 268 WEST AMERICAN SHELLS bluish-green, and its length is from an inch to twoinches. Good specimens may often be found inrocky places between tide marks, and at lowestwater. Mopdlia hindsii, (Sby.), Reeve, Hindss shell of this species is much depressed, and thesurface is nearly smooth. The girdle has only afew short hairs. The color is olive, while the in-terior is white, with short crimson rays under thebeaks; its length is two inches. Found in SanFrancisco Bay and middle California. By some ofthe best authorities this is considered as only avariety of the last species. Mopdlia lignosa, Gld.,the Woody Chiton, Fig-ure 300. This tine spe-cies is well representedin the figure, which isthat of a large speci-men. The valves arelight green in colorwithin, w
