Lunar DNA library, conceptual computer artwork. The surface of the Moon is across bottom, with the Earth in the background. The helical molecule of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid, orange) and the bands of a DNA autoradiogram (multicoloured) are seen at centre. DNA carries the genetic code that can be deciphered using an autoradiogram. This genetic code, which is different for each of the animal and plant species on Earth, is used for the growth and development of every living organism. There are proposals to store the genetic codes (genomes) of Earth in a library on the Moon. This is part of an insurance plan against worldwide catastrophes, such as an asteroid impact.
