Mr. Houghteling has been a member of the firm of Peabody,Houghteling & Company since 1882, and has been an influential fac-tor in its growth and continued high standing. Two of his threesons, James L., Jr., and William, are connected with the house, inwhich three generations are thus active at the present time. Outside of his business relations, Mr. Houghteling is most promi-nent in Christian work, the Young Mens Christian Association ofChicago being greatly indebted to him for its firm and flourishingstatus.
