He represented his native State in the con-vention (1787) for the formation of the Federal Con-stitution, and in 1791 was elected to Congress. Thricehe was re-elected, serving four terms in the House, ofwhich he was Speaker from 1795 to 1799. He waschosen senator of the United States, and served from1799 to 1805. He was appointed hy President Adamsa brigadier-general, with the privilege of retaininghis seat in the Senate. He became largely interested with Symmes andothers in the purchase and settlement of westernmilitary lands, the town of Dayton, in Ohio, being. GEN. ELIAS DAYTON. His early intimacyin boyli6od with Aaron Burr, and his later associa-tion with him in the Senate of the United States, ledhim to look with more favor than prudence wouldhave dictated upon the schemes of that aspiring andcrafty politician, so that by advancing money to aidBurr in his adventures he became compromised withhim in the charge of treason. This indictment, how-ever, was not tried, and Mr. Daytons bail was re-leased. This unhappy affair, and the breaking up ofthe Federal party, of which he was a leader, put anend to Mr. Daytons political aspirations. He wassubsequently elected repeatedly to the Council of theNew Jersey Legislature, and held several importantoffices in his native town. He received, in 1798. fromhis alma mater the honorary degree of Doctor ofLaws. His later days were passed at hom
