The construction of the 16/34 runway extension on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson includes the excavation of 12 million cubic yards of material. As the Army Corps of Engineers - Alaska District, completes this effort, dump trucks remove up to 100 tons of material at a time. The final design reduced total excavation by million cubic yards and decreased the hail distance of million cubic yards of material from 4 miles round trip to 1 mile round trip. This led to a cost savings of over $27 million.
