Sawmill, 16th century artwork. This sawmill is being operated by pulling on a rope attached to a crank and pulley system. This powers a vertical chainsaw, which is cutting a log being moved forward by a foot-operated wheel. This is an engraving from a book by the French inventor and mathematician Jacques Besson (circa 1540-1573). The book was titled Theatre des instrumens mathematiques et mechaniques (Theatre of mathematical and mechanical instruments). This artwork is from an edition published in Lyon in 1596.
