Guy de Chauliac (), French surgeon. Guy de Chauliac was the most eminent surgeon of the European Middle Ages. He was physician to Popes Clement VI, Innocent VI and Urban V at Avignon. His Chirugia magna of 1363 was used as a manual by physicians for the next three centuries. In it he describes surgical procedures including those for hernia and cataract, and the use of a narcotic inhalation to induce sleep in surgical patients.
