Writing of the fur trade atAlbany, he said : Many persons have assured me that the Indians arefrequently cheated in disposing of their goods, especially when they are inliquor, and that sometimes they do not get one-half, or one-tenth, of thevalue of their goods. I have been witness to several transactions of thiskind. He adds that the avarice and selfishness of the inhabitants ofAlbany are well known. Kalm had in mind particularly the fur men, as a class, not only in Albany but elsewhere, at that time, boreevil reputations. Parkman says many of them were ruffians of the coarseststamp, who strove with each other in rapacity, violence, and cheated, cursed and plundered the Indians, and outraged theirfamilies. l6 ft?
