So after going to the vessel, seeing about their baggage &c, we all walk, Logan, & young Bailey (the Doctor ?s son,) accompanying us across the island roads to where the boats lay. By quiet paths, bordered by heath and juniper, where on either the side, the sloping hillsides and greensward, bright in the golden sunlight, would be framed in by rich, foliage, its margin spotted by little shady places beautiful to look upon. Where the maple leaves were tinged with premonitory yellowish crimson, and the beauteous arbor vitae grew, ever the broad lake on our left. At Logan ?s farm house, & then after much consumption of home made pies down the steep pathway cut skirting the cliff side to where the boat lay. All in, and soul up for the opposite shore, perhaps ten miles distance. The wind blew freshly, waves danced and sometimes dashed over us. Some rowing, and the water, as usual, makes Waud render up his last meal. Across at length, though eight miles away from the desired spot. Much cutting down of trees, picnicking & a fire built. Thus waned the afternoon; and then re-embarking, the few who were still for visiting the old Fort-place were overruled, and after some hours rowing necessitated by the wind being dead ahead, we got back to Mackinac by 8; Hayes & Waud going with Logan, (with whom they ?ll board,) and we [Gunn and William Barth] to the Hospital. 11. Sunday. I ?d intended to return by the Pacific, got all ready for descending at noon-tide, but was over-persuaded, by Barth, secretly abetted by mine own liking. So I tarry another week. Hayes and Barth arrive, being bidden yesterday, to dine. Took last block to [Frank] Noble & the Pacific. A generally jolly dinner, talk & fumigation succeeding.
