Gall bladder cancer surgery. Image 3 of 12. Liver segment being marked during surgery to remove a cancerous gall bladder. A cautery tool is being used to make a shallow burn to indicate which part of the liver should be removed. The gall bladder is a small organ that stores bile from the liver, and releases it into the digestive tract. Cancer of the gall bladder is relatively rare, and is usually treated by surgical removal. Prognosis is poor, because the cancer has usually spread, requiring removal of parts of the liver and other surrounding organs.
