The Robber from Mechel's "Triumph of Death" 1860

The armed Robber is in the middle of a violent assault on a woman in the forest. He struggles with her as he tries to steal the basket on her head. The Robber seems oblivious to the figure of Death who has a hand on his collar and is about to pull him in the opposite direction. Handcoloured engraving from Chretien Mechel's "La Triomphe de la Mort" (The Triumph of Death) published in 1860 in Stuttgart. It is believed that Mechel's engravings were not after Holbein, but after sketches by a young Peter Paul Rubens (1577~1640).
