John Fletcher, Playwright
John Fletcher was born in 1579 and died in 1625. He was a much regarded playwright of the Elizabethan era and his fame rivaled Shakespeare’s in his day. He was educated at Corpus Christi College in Cambridge. He collaborated with a number of playwrights including Shakespeare but particularly Beaumont with whom he wrote the successful play Philaster. He also wrote The Woman’s Prize, Valentinian, Wit without Money and many other plays. His fame declined after his death and his work is rarely performed today.
