NHB staff, as well as patients and visitors, had the opportunity to examine details of just what that meant at the command's colorful spring-themed, Patient Safety Awareness Week display on the Quarterdeck all week. Mayda Schaefer, NHB patient safety analyst and prime architect of the display, used the display to provide added focus that everyone in the healthcare process has a role in delivering safe care. The display also allows all staff to share in the common goal of making a positive difference in patient safety. Whether it's with a spring in one's steps, a spring forward in time, or even spring in the air, the display reminded viewers on such National Patient Safety goals as; Medication Errors, defined as when a patient receives the wrong medication, or when they receive the right meds, but in the wrong dose or manner delivery. NHB takes every precaution to ensure every patient gets the correct medication, in the correct dose and manner every time; Improve Staff Communication by getting important test results to the right staff person on time. Critical results of tests and diagnostic procedures that fall significantly outside the normal range may indicate a life-threatening situation. It's very important to provide the patient's physician the results to take action quickly; and Improve the Accuracy of Patient Identification by using at least two ways to identify patients. At NHB, full name and date of birth of each patient are used for every encounter and procedure. This is done to make sure that each patient gets the correct medicine and treatment in the proper manner and location.
