9th Lancers charging the guns at Elouges, retreat from Mons, 24 August 1914, WW1

Illustration by Stanley L. Wood (1866-1928) from the history of the Great war published in 1921. It is believed to have been the first cavalry charge of the war. Increasingly trench warfare, mud & machine guns undermined their effectiveness, and the last charge was at the battle of the Somme in 1916 which saw the introduction of tanks to the battlefield.
