Sawing the skull is no easy task; it may be greatly facilitated bythe employment of an electric or dental engine. For this part of theoperation it is a decided advantage to be ambidextrous. While thesawing is being done with one hand, the head must be steadied withthe other, placed either on the vertex or on the face and protectedby a towel, for the saw is liable to slip, especially when first scalp, especially of a female, should be protected from sawdustby wrapping towels about it. Proffered assistance should be declined, because, while it is natural to look out for ones own fingers, it isimpossible effectively to guard anothers. The reason I often givefor not accepting aid is that I am reasonably supposed to know. Fig. I2t.—While the right ear is held back with the left hand an incision is started directly over themastoid process. The remainder of the incision over the vertex will be made from within outward, thusavoiding dulling the knife and cutting the hair.
