The Gothic architecture of this district isnot so peculiarly important, nor is it so distin-guished from that of otlier parts of France. Themost important buildings are the cathedrals ofBayonne and Bordeaux, and the churches ofS. Seurin and S. Michel at Bortleaux. S. Michelhas an isolated tower ; and, in connection withthe cathedral, tliough standing 200 feet awayfrom the east end, is the famous tower Pey-. France, Part VII.: Church of S. Eutropius,Saintes (on Seashore) ; Florid RomanesqueCapitals. Berland, named from that archbishop of Bor-deaux who saw to this building in the fifteenthcentury. Of the Gothic epoch are the towersof the port at La Rochelle, two of them stillflanking the entrance to the modern dock andthe third now surrounded by made land, thoughthis is the only one which retains its ancientspire. Nothing that has been preserved inEurope is at all of the character of these differ essentially from the mediieval mili-tary architecture which is generally cited. Ofthe latest Gothic style are parts of the cathe-dral of Auch (Gers) and of Limoges (Haute-Vienne), and there is a wonderful chajiel atMenigoute, and a cliurch at Touars (Deux-Sfevres).
