Macedonia, a plea for the primitive . e moisture to struggle alone, and offerslittle or no assistance in its contest against thesun ; or perhaps, to state his case literally andtruly, it should be said that the benefit of manymodern inventions and ideas has yet to be broughtto his notice. For the present, therefore, he is,faute de mieux, content merely to scratch the soil, but even so, aided by his wonderful knowledgeof the climate, he achieves results which stimulateones interest and deserve ones admiration. TOBACCO Foremost on the list of industries must beconsidered that of tobacco-growing. The frag-rant weed is the most lucrative and mostubiquitous of Macedonias products. It is seenin all parts of the country, sometimes only onlittle patches planted in the most remote spots, and, although thousands of smokers have neverheard of Macedonian tobacco, they have un-doubtedly enjoyed its subtle flavour in the finestbrands of Turkish cigarettes. For such misconcep-tion there is naturally some excuse, since the country •^?:. PRODUCTS 8i groaned under the Turkish yoke for centuries, and the chief town of the export trade—Kavalla—was before recent Balkan wars under thesuzerainty of the Turks and in possession ofthe Bulgars for the greater part of the late Euro-pean war. Indeed, if one may particularize of acountry which produces tobacco with such pro-lixity throughout its entire length and breadthit may be said that the plains of Drama, whichwere likewise in the possession of Turkey tillMacedonia came under Greek rule, produce thefinest Oriental tobacco in the world. Kavalla, itself, owes its importance and wealth as a portto the tobacco trade, and many well-knownfirms, including a few British, have large ware-houses on its quayside and around the littleharbour. In the fertile plains and valleys, there are largeareas under cultivation as well as many smallscattered fields and a number of privately-ownedplantations. How national is the industry andhow popular the weed is
