A Victorian Picnic, c1860. The English left the 'hunter's meal' unnamed until after 1806, when they began calling most alfresco meals a picnic. The picnic continued to grow in popularity during the 19th century. The picnic menus within Mrs Beeton's 'Book of Household Management', 1861, are lavish and extravagant.
