1840 portrait of Throttler Smith', a Dudley (UK) petty criminal turned public executioner for Staffordshire . George Smith was from Rowley Regis. (1805–1874). He learned the trade as assistant to William Calcraft. His career saw him travelling the country to carry out the death sentence (Chester, Warwick, Shrewsbury & Worcester). He was known for wearing a long white coat and top hat during public hangings.
