. Report of the Committee of Merchants for the Relief of Colored People, Suffering from the Late Riots in the City of New York . e, seventy-five 47-100 Dollars ($). Having received fromJonathan Sturges, Treasurer, $2,C55 35-100. The majority of the colored people are now at work at their accustomed placesof business, excepting those employed in the Tobacco Factories, of whom thereare about two hundred. Their employers are afraid, as yet, to set them to work. We have pleasure in assuring you that your benefactions have afforded timelyrelief and alleviated very much distress. In all cases the sums given (howeversmall they may have been) were gratefully received and in many cases evenwith apologies for being under the necessity of asking assistance. We haveheard no harsh or unkind expressions or threats towards their persecutors. This substantial expression of good feeling towards them, on the part of ourcommunity, has encouraged them and made them feel that they still had friendsamong us who would stand by and protect them.
