On the right,about two miles away, one can just catch glimpsesof the chimneys and roofs of Otley. Behind andabove the house loom the Farnley moors andquarries. Across the gleaming waters of theWharfe stretches the wild craggy sweep of the over-hanging hill called the Otley Chevin. A hundredyears ago the deer wandered among the shadowsof the spruce firs that crown its heights, but theyhave all disappeared now that the new road fromLeeds
