Seal rehabilitation centre worker examining an injured or sick harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) that has been brought in on a stretcher. Common conditions include infections, broken flippers, poisoning by pollution, and swallowed fishhooks. This work is being carried out at the Seal Rehabilitation and Research Centre (SRRC), in Pieterburen, the Netherlands. Sick, injured and orphaned seals are treated and cared for here until they can be released back into the wild. The centre was founded in 1971, and treats around 200 seals a year.
