Fringe-tree or Old Man's Beard (494) — Chionan- thus virginica—is a liandsome shrub or small tree with large opposite (occa- sionally alternate) entire-edged deciduous leaves and fringe-like drooping white flowers in May and June. The fruit is a dark blue oval drupe f inch long, ripe in the fall. There is a Chinese species with broader and less fringe-like petals to the flowers, which are not so pendent on the branches, Chinese Fringe-tree (495) — Chionanthus rettisa. Tlie leaves are opposite, simple, deciduous (or evergreen in the tropics), entire or notched. The flowers are tubular or bell-shaped with a 4-lobed border and 4 stamens included in the tube. The fruit is a 2-celled many-seeded capsule. The stems are more or less 4-sided. Only a few of the hardier.
