Osteoarthritis. Elderly woman's hands use knitting needles whilst affected by osteoarthritis and showing Heberden's nodes. Osteoarthritis is a common form of arthritis resulting from wear and tear on joints. It is a disease of joint cartilage, associated with secondary changes in underlying bone which may be painful and ultimately impairs and deforms the function of the affected joint. Heberden's nodes are ring-like swellings in the finger joints near the fingertips. These nodes are formed by a lump of cartilage. Osteoarthritis occurs most frequently in the elderly. Treatment includes anti- inflammatory drugs or surgery in severe cases.
