A few minutes later is seen a school ofmonkeys, led by a solemn-looking old pilot, who doubtless. A Peep at My Cage knows every palm tree that bears nuts within many milesaround. They are now coming to inspect my cage andsee what new thing this is set up in monkeydom. As they draw nearer they become more cautious. They j6 APES AND MONKEYS find a strong bough in the top of a big tree, and the graveold pilot perches himself far out on it in order to get agood peep at my cage. Just behind him sits the next inrank, resting his hands on the shoulder of the leader,while a dozen more occupy similar attitudes behind eachother along the limb. Each one pushes the one just infront of him to make him move up a little closer, but noneof them except the pilot seems to want the front seat. They look on in silence, occasionally turning their littleheads from side to side, as if to be certain it is not anillusion. Again they nudge each other, and move up alittle closer, meanwhile squinting their bright eyes, as if indoubt about the strange sight before them. They havemade such calls before, but ha
