However hehas never been an office seeker, and the positionshe has held have only been accei)ted with reluc-tance. He served as Justice of the Peace whenthe citj- was incorporated in 1858; he was also aji-pointed Postmaster in May, 1864, by PresidentLincoln, and held this iKisition until he resignedin Jtdy, 1871. Since 1885 he has been CountyAgent of the State Board of Correction and Char-ities, although he gives his main attention to thepractice of law.
