The steps leading up to Christ Church Cathedral in the New Zealand South Island city of tower of the cathedral is 35 metres high. The cathedral will seat up to 350 people and is some 58 metres in length and 35 metres in of the present cathedral began in 1925 and finished in 1965. Much of it is constructed of marble from the Murchison earthquake is was thought too risky to use big blocks of marble so it was ground down and mixed with plaster. This gives the cathedral stonework its unusual appearance and colour. The steps shown here are made of granite from Tonga Beach in Abel Tasman National Park. Worth noting in the interior is the organ, originally imported from London in 1871 and a labarynith.
