CANCER CELL, ILLUSTRATION

Illustration of how a cell becomes a cancer cell. Over time, while they are growing and dividing, genes in the cell undergo changes. The body has several responses to this problem : - it repairs the gene and the cell is healthy again and can grow and divide. - it destroys the cell that has changed too much (apoptosis) - if the gene has changed too much, and the gene sequence that sets off apoptosis has also changed too much, the cell isn't destroyed. It will become a cancer cell that grows and divides to form a primary tumour (localised cancer) which can release metastases that will contaminate other organs via the blood.
