Cyclists were offered free safety checks on their bikes, leaflets and advice on cycling safely and a fee breakfact bag at the Exchanging Places cycle safety event in Victoria Park East london today. Coinciding with London's Road Safety week, Metropolitan Police traffic officers with partner agencies and groups held an Exchanging Places HGC, Cycle Safety event in Victoria Park today. This event is one of a long running series of events aimed at developing more awareness for cyclists on the road. As part of the event cyclists are sat in the driving seat of an HGV and given the drivers view, especially of the nearside of the truck. A police officer demonstrates how easily cyclists can become unseen by drivers of large vehicles as he moves down the side of the truck with a cycle. Cyclists are involved in a significant number of fatal and serious accidents on London's roads each year, more recently in London the Cycle Superhighway at the nearby Bow interchange has seen two fatal accidents involving cyclists. A review is currently underway of Cycle Superhighway Junctions by Transport for London and the mayor Boris Johnson.
