LAKE MOOSELUCMEGUNTIC. ribbon, fluttering in the wind, appeared Jihe narrow and crookedUmbagog, most beautiful of all these lakes ; at the foot of Umbagogthe little hamlet of Lakeside, with its excellent hotel nestling at thefoot of Hampshire Hill, and in the farthest distance the grand chainof the White Mountain peaks closing the view in that direction. The cluster of loof cabins afew rods from the lake look like brown spots, and are almost lostin the forest. A turn to the left discloses a part of Oquossoc Lake,including South Cove and South Bay Island ; the farms along itsshores detract from the romance and wildness of the view, but makethe picture more suggestive of civilization.
