White ceramic phrenology bust and ink well with gilt transfer printed decoration. This piece is by phrenologist, Frederick Bridges and dates from around 1850, England. Phrenology is a branch of pseudoscience in which the morphology of the skull is studied. Phrenologists believed the size and shape of the skull to be indicative of various emotional and character traits and of mental abilities. Dr. Franz Joseph Gall (1758-1828) is considered to be the founder of phrenology. Whilst the discipline is regarded as pseudoscience today, it was very popular during the nineteenth century, and Dr. Gall's view of the brain as a modular organ with localized functions is considered to be of historical significance to modern day neuropsychology.
