Columbus monument, Cordoba, Spain. This monument commemorates the May 1486 meeting of Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) with Isabella I of Castile (1451-1504) and Ferdinand II of Aragon (1452-1516). Columbus had sought funding from European rulers for his plans to travel westwards to reach Asia and the East Indies. After several years of negotiation, he succeeded in getting Isabella and Ferdinand to finance his epic voyage that resulted in the discovery of the Americas. The key meeting took place here at the Alcazar, the royal castle and palace of the recently conquered Cordoba.
