The resort of Magazia on the Greek island of Skyros
There are many interesting villages and towns scattered all over the northern region of Skyros. One of the most popular holiday destinations on the island is the beautiful resort of Magazia. The golden sandy beach of Magazia stretches along the coast, and joins with that of the neighbouring resort of Molos to the north. Magazia is a resort that is well developed for tourism, though this has not changed the traditional look and appearance of the place. Skyros lies in the Northern Aegean, the largest and most isolated of the Northern Sporades. The island is sparsely populated, and its small community - who mostly live in its capital - are closely-knit. Despite the variety and beauty of its terrain, it lies well off most tourist itineraries. The island was first mentioned by Homer, and Achilles hid here until he was called up to fight in the Siege of Troy. In subsequent centuries, it was occupied first by the Athenians, and later by the Romans, Venetians, Turks and Russians, as well as spending a century as part of the Byzantine Empire. In the First World War, Tris Boukes Bay (on the south-west of the island) was used as anchorage for hospital ships treating the wounded from Gallipoli. It was on one of these that the English poet Rupert Brooke died in April 1915.
