ALFRED POWELL A particular interest attaches to the water-colourwork of Mr. Alfred Powell, because he can beaccounted as one of the better exponents of thetradition which was established by the earliermasters of the art. In his paintings he followsthe simple broad methods which were generallypractised by the leaders in water-colour nearly acentury ago, and he applies these methods with avery intelligent appreciation of their value andof the manner in which they should be employedfor the interpretation of the subjects he a craftsman, indeed, he is markedly accom-plished ; the directness and straightforwardness ofhis work can always be admired, and there is some-thing that specially attracts in the certainty withwhich he states the conclusions to which he has been brought by his study of nature. 103 WATER-COLOUR PAINTING In arriving at these conclusions he takes con-siderable pains to satisfy himself that he has usedthe right kind of observation, and that his naturestudy
