The department has all the accessories of alarm boxes, patrol wagon, etc. It can besaid, too, that in view of the great increase of Omahas population, including people of allclasses, that the city has been very well policed. During the past year great crimes havebeen few and rarely have offenders of any grade escaped the law. Omahas paid fire department is something of which its citizens are particularly andjustly proud. In point of equipment and efficiency it is not excelled in any city in the UnionIt, too, is under the control of the police and fire commission, but its excellence can be. RESIDENCE OF C. When it is stated that the total fire losses for 1887 have been lessthan $200,000, while the insurance companies have reaped over $900,000 in premiums itwill be understood that the city has first-class fire protection. -The department has a totalof 52 men, including a chief, his two assistants, a superintendent of fire alarm and 48men distributed at six hose-house stations in desirable parts of the city. The departmenthas two steamers, a chemical engine, and about 10,000 feet of hose. The steamers arenever used, however, as the direct pressure pump of the City Water Works furnishesforce enough to carry streams of
