The bottom of the base FURNITURE FOR THE HALL 147 is floored and may be zinc-lined, or the bottom may have groovesrunning to the center hole, in which a pan is placed to receivethe water that may drip from the umbrellas. Inasmuch as um-brellas properly cared for should be opened out to dry, pans inthe homes are hardly needed. Fig. 171 is planned for four com-partments, but its entire length may be shortened for threeopenings if desired. For a small stand Fig. 172 will be foundserviceable to go in a certain corner. The arrangement for thetop is the same as shown in the plan, compartments being builtaround a 2^-inch square post and the sides set in i^-inchsquare blocks with chamfered edges. A dull oil finish will befound most satisfactory to apply to this character of furniture. Chairs Well, sir, I am ready to sit down in my easy chair when sup-per i
