Although there is marked angulation in6 82 PYELOGRAPHY the ureter just below the ureteropelvic juncture, there is noevidence that it is the cause of any symptoms. The local-ized irregular areas of evident dilatation are caused byprofuse return flow. In Fig. 19 the right pelvis is unusu-ally low, being situated on a level with the crest of theilium. The caudad direction of the calyces shows thatthe kidney was partially rotated. Although incompletelyfilled, the calyces are unusually large and probably slightly. Fig. 48.—Abnormal position of kidney. dilated. Acute angulation of the ureter is visible a shortdistance below the ureteropelvic juncture. The pelvis ofthe left kidney is indistinct, but its position is seen to beunusually low. In Fig. 48 the right pelvis is considerablylower than the left. The calyces are distinctly broader andmore elongated than those of the left pelvis. Evidently atemporary obstruction has been present and caused thisslight degree of pelvic dilatation. In Fig. 49 the renal ABNORMAL POSITION 83 pelvis is situated at the level of the fourth lumbar has rotated slightly so that the middle calyces extendcaudad. The ureter has been displaced by the lower pole ofthe kidney so that it overlies the fifth lumbar Fig. 50 the right pelvis lies at a level of the third lumbarvertebra, the left at a level of the second lumbar vertebra.
