It was interesting to note the diversityof costumes and to watch the difference in the behaviorof the tourists and pilgrims of the various (247) 248 A TRIP TO THE ORIENT. Notice that Russian group, said a companion as aparty of Russian pilgrims entered the church. These people from the North, long-haired, heavy-bearded, long-booted, heavy-coated men, and short-frocked, heavy-shod women had come there, we couldplainly see, on a holy pilgrimage to the tomb of theirSavior, believing and trusting in the reality of every-thing they saw. At the Stone of Unction they pros-trated themselves and kissed the stone slab, and as theyrose we could see the shaggy-bearded men wiping awaythe tears with their rough hands. Then, with uncoveredheads, they slowly approached the entrance to theSepulchre, bowed down, crossed themselves, kneltinside, and after kissing the marble tomb, backed out,bowing and crossing themselves until well away fromthe tomb. The people of other nationalities outwardly showmore reverence for the sacred places than do those ofour own country, commented my companion. Theguards have just censured that group of America
