Benkei, Japanese Warrior Monk, 12th Century


Entitled: "Daimotsu kaijo no tsuki"; shows a Musashibo Benkei praying to appease the gods and calm the rough seas so that his ship may cross Daimotsu Bay safely. Musashibo Benkei (1155-1189), popularly called Benkei, was a Japanese warrior monk who served Minamoto no Yoshitsune. He is commonly depicted as a man of great strength and loyalty, and a popular subject of Japanese folklore. Woodcut by Yoshitoshi Taiso, circa 1880s.
