In 1852 Doctor and Mrs. Cunnynghamjoined the mission staff, and, two yearslater, Messrs. Kelley, L,ambuth, andBelton arrived from home with theirwives. In 1856 only the L,ambuths andCunnynghams remained. The new treatyprivileges, resulting from the Tientsinconvention of 1858,gave Doctor Cunnyng-ham an opportunity to visit Hang-Chow,an ancient city situated two hundredmiles from Shanghai, at the terminus ofthe Grand Canal, and having a popula-tion of three-quarters of a million. J. Allen and the Rev. M. were sent out at this time, thatthey might take advantage of the morefavorable circumstances. Mr. and , however, were compelled, fromreasons of health, to return in 1861, aftera year in China, leaving their associate,Doctor Allen, behind.
