To obtain maximum growth and quality most of the volume should be in the 16- and 18- inch diameter classes. Annual growth of sawtimber in the Central States exceeds 4 billion board-feet. This amounts to about 100 board-feet per acre per year - a figure that could be doubled or tripled with reasonable effort. About 80 percent of the forest land is well enough stocked so that volume will increase rapidly if the stands are adequately protected and well managed. A trend in that direc- tion is indicated by the fact that at the present time the forests are growing more than twice as much as is being 8.
