REHABILITATION, ELDERLY PERSON

Photo essay. Therapy pool at Dinan, in the Britanny region of France. The sensation of weightlessness is the large advantage to re-education in a pool, thus facilitating the movement by alleviating stress to joints. Warm water (34°C) relaxes the muscles, the patient regains confidence by rediscovering ease of movement, and this flexibility is gradually integrated into daily activities. Pool re-education is principally indicated after surgery (lower limbs, spine, shoulder, etc) and for chronic pain linked to progressive joint stiffness where pain hinders joint movement and lack of movement increases the pain. Gently resuming movement in the water helps to break this vicious circle and obtain considerable relief. Here, correcting the elevation of the humerus head during forward abduction.
