Portrait photo of J (John) Edgar Hoover (1895 - 1972) - the first Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the USA. Hoover was appointed director of the Bureau of Investigation, the FBI's predecessor, in 1924 and helped found the FBI itself in 1935. He remained Director until his death and built the FBI into a large crime-fighting agency but was a controversial figure who is often accused of exceeding his jurisdiction to harass political dissenters and of collecting evidence using illegal methods. Photo taken at the US Department of Justice on April 5 1940 by Harris & Ewing.
