Detail of copper clad uppers section of the Sigismund Tower, Wavel Royal Cathedral, Wavel Hill, Krakow, Malopolska, Poland.

The Zygmunt (Sigismund Bell) cast in 1520 and weighing 11 tonnes, is the largest historic bell in Poland. The King Boleslaw Chrobry founded the original St Gereon's Church on the site circa 1020. This was replaced by a Romanesque Church of Our Lady Mary in the 12 th century. After being burnt down in 1305, the present Gothic Cathedral was built. This was added to over the years, a major reconstruction having been carried out under King Alexander Jagiellonczyk in the early 16 th century, when a number of chapels were added. It is the coronation and burial place of Polish monarchs.
