A convenient and manageable splint for fracture belowthe knee may be made of four such strips, see fig. 26. Theseshould be long enough to extend on the anterior and posteriorsurface of the Umb, from the toes to above the patella; 2being applied in front and 2 behind. They are secured in placeby circular gauze bandages which may be plastered or notaccording to the strength needed, and the likelihood of anearly removal being required. Sometimes three layers offlannel may be applied posteriorly, or the strength increasedby interposing strips of pasteboard or of thin wood (fig. 25).Figs. 27 and 28 give the shape of these flannel splintsafter they have been moulded to the limb. If carefully pre-pared and not exposed to wet they will last dm-ing the whole PLASTER-OF-PARIS SPLINTS. i%S treatment of the case. Impregnation with wax or, stillbetter, brushing them over with a saturated alcoholic solution. Fig. 26.—Shape of the anterior and posterior flannel strips. They are cut suffi-ciently long to extend from mid thigh to the toes, and drawn of the shapebest suited for an average limb.
