Alex Sanchez, assigned to the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, uses an M4 carbine to practice weapon malfunction drills in the hangar bay of the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) in the Pacific Ocean on Dec. 2, 2011. The Makin Island and the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit are deployed to the 5th Fleet and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility.
