The enlargement of the activities of the School for the past year,as indicated by the increase in enrollment, is more marked thanit has been in any corresponding period of its history, with thesingle exception of 1894, the year of its removal to the presentlocation at Broad and Pine streets. The registration for the year1897 amounted to 809, an increase over the preceding year of 177 ;nearly 30 per cent. The increase is pretty evenly distributed among the differentdepartments, and is largely to be attributed to the much greaterdemand for the free scholarships, provided for by the appropria-tions received from the State. In the case of the scholarshipsavailable for residents of this city and vicinity also, the increaseis considerable, although the number of appointments made from 09 the Public Schools remains as it has been for several years.
